It is specifically engineered to allow military personnel to drink safely from a canteen while wearing a gas mask without breaking the protective seal.  It is a specialized military component designed for the Joint Service General Purpose Mask (JSGPM) program. Its primary feature is a self-sealing interface that allows safe hydration in contaminated environments without breaking the mask's protective seal.
